Disaster Relief

disaster.jpg    Southern Volunteer Fire Department is also a disaster response organization.  Working with other organizations and agencies, we help to provide disaster response/relief operations.  This includes working with victims to help them get out of a disaster area and into shelters or to family members else where.  We work to help provide clothing, food and other necessities that may be needed by the victims and that are sometimes overlooked or not supplies by other organizations.

We are always working to prepare for the next disaster and working with communities to be better prepared before a disaster strikes.  Even in the bad times, disasters wait for no one.  Whether its working with local groups and organizations in forming community emergency response teams (CERT) or other relief groups, our goal is to help prepare people to survive no less than 72, but up-to 96 hours or more on their own, without support from the outside.donatenowlogo1.gif   Most organizations, include the American Red Cross, now recommend the ability to survive on your own for no less than 72 hours.

Our studies have shown that not everyone is prepared for this and that there are many small things that can be done to achieve this goal.  You can help support these basic programs by making a small donation, helping to organization a local class or become a member.  If you would like more information, please contact us and we will get the apporiate information and forms (if needed).  During a disaster is never the time to get prepared or train for one, by then its too late.  Get your training today.

All year long, we are looking for support that will help us to help others during a disaster or emergency event.  Our operation is 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, non-stop, but with out your support, we can not always make our goals or help those we try to help.  We need your support to continue our disaster operations, but before you contact us about a donation, please read the following.

2_28_Fire_K9.jpg    While 1000's of people and business donate everyday to organizations, including ours, sometimes these donations do not quite fit into the need that we have.  Most disaster response organization would like their donors to know that you should contact them first with your donation idea, so that it can be discussed before hand.  There have been times were a company will donate extreme cold weather jackets to earthquake victims in tropical climates where they are not needed and the donation is wasted or they might donate t-shirts to victims of a blizzard that need coats.  In our case, we do not have the space to keep and maintain clothing or other donations at this time and generally we are in need of other items for the victims.  Another factor in making a donation for disaster of items, is that it can cost a lot of money and time to storage, prepare and transport those donations to a disaster zone.Melody_Fire.jpg

The most efficient donation is a financial donation.  Yes, we are talking about some type of cash donation, whether by credit card, check, cash, coins, whatever.  The main reason for this type of donation request is the fact that funds can be moved from one location to another very easily.  Another huge benefit is that the funds can be used to purchase items locally or around the disaster area, which helps to bring back the economy that may have been disrupted by the disaster.  This allows us to purchase the items that are really need, where they are needed and not have to spend much to get them to the victims.

Please learn more about disaster relief work, becoming a disaster response volunteer, donating or just about any other thing that can go along with disasters today.  You might just help your own family one day.
