One of the first things to be lost during a disaster or emergency is the use of normal communications. In this day and age of technology, both landline and mobile phones are some of the first things affected during a disaster. Whether its an overload of the system, physical damage to the lines or other equipment, you can not rely on phones to be there for you when you need them.
Even modern public safety agencies have trouble with their communications during a disaster. Whether its a lose of equipment or overlaoding, it may continue to work, but it will most likely run at a limited capacity.
For over 100 years, one form of commuication has proven itself time and time again to be very valuable.
